Too Much??
Opinions Please...

I like this look. I'm just really pasty, not wearing slim fit khakis, & therefore I'm afraid I look like a dolt, or at least like I'm trying to hard... It may also very well be that my khakis are too light colored. Well at least the Top Siders look like they belong!

Random Time Wasting Websites...

Saturday, October 3, 2009
Here are a bunch of awesome, time wasting, websites for your amusement.

Basically people submit texts that they have received to this website, if they are funny/appalling enough they get posted. The website is updated almost constantly, so I'm always reading them. Needless to say, none of my texts have ever been posted...

I love this website. It's a hilarious compilation of submitted awkward family photos, hence the name. It's updated pretty much daily so put it in your RSS feed.

Another hilarious website - How many times have you been to Wal-Mart and thought to yourself, "Holy Mother... that person's car/outfit is RIDICULOUS!" Well the creators of this website took it a step further and took pictures of these outrages Wally World patrons in their Sunday Best... Or finest hunting garb... Or Meth Head chic attire... Also updated frequently, it's definitely worth putting in the RSS feed.

The Next Preppy Thing To Hit A Campus Near You...

Thursday, October 1, 2009
Please let me be the first to forecast this now:

Tucker Blair Needlepoint Accessories will be the next big "must have" on college campuses in the Southeast and Northeast.

Above is a picture of their website. Tucker Blair has needlepoint belts, headbands, flip-flops, and key fobs. They do all their sales online, so don't plan on snagging anything Tucker Blair off shelves at Saks any time soon, but apparently they do it this way to save us (the poor college student shopper) big bucks. The patterns they have are fun and classic, much like that of Vineyard Vines, but less in your face (sometimes Vineyard Vines ties come close to sending me into seizures).

Griffin's Pick? The Bow-Tie & Champagne Needlepoint belt:

Like I said, classic, not too in-your-face, and fun. I can wear this out on the range, at the office, or out at night. I'm seriously just waiting to get paid so I can purchase this snazzy accessory I'm sure I'll have for a long, long time.

So, guys and dolls, Do yourselves a favor, Be an early-adopter and buy yourself a sweet belt, headband - or - dog collar (yeah, you heard me).

Fun fact: Tucker Blair isn't a real person, just a couple of family names the founder pieced together.

Mega thanks go out to Taylor Llewellyn for finding me (somehow) on Twitter.
Can't wait to see what all is to come for you guys in the future (aside from my order)!

I'm Constantly Finding Myself Yessing Too Hard...

Props to Simmons for showing this to me:

Nota Bene:
This is the same guy who does Urban Ninja, which also worth checking out.

Train Riding Hobos...

Friday, September 25, 2009
So,
As some of you may or may not know there are very few things in this world that scare me, but the one that freaks me out the most, second only to maybe, oh, the apocalypse are hobos/homeless people. More specifically the train riding stowaways.

Yes.

You heard me.

Stop laughing.

I'm not completely sure why hobos scare me so much, but here are several times that I remember being particularly terrified for my life:

As a child, on the way to church downtown, we would pass under the interstate and there would be tents set up under there and creepy homeless people in them that would stare at us as we drove by. The Jeanie always made the conscious effort to lock the doors which may have actually only seated the fear even more deeply into my psyche.

On the day of my confirmation, a toothless, strung out homeless woman was hustling people for money outside my church. My father was one of those people, and she followed us all the way to the car. He gave her money because he's Catholic I guess, but it was really disconcerting.

The Jeanie would also ALWAYS make it a point to tell my brother and I to stay as far away from ALL homeless people as possible. For example, if we were in the path to intersecting a homeless person on the sidewalk we were to cross the street and walk down the other sidewalk until the coast was clear.

When I was younger, I would occasionally spend the night with my aunt in Atlanta. She lived in a very nice condominium complex in Vinings that happened to back up to the train tracks. I would hear the trains go by the complex all night long and watch the eerie orange glow from the street lamps. There were no horns or anything, just the clacking of the train on the tracks and the scraping of chains from the sidecars. I would consistently have nightmares of hobos jumping off the train, scaling the wall into the complex (that were 12 feet tall, smooth concrete with barbed wire on top), breaking into my aunt's condo (which was one of literally about 250 and relatively difficult to find), kidnapping me and killing me. Also, I have a vivid imagination and dream in color.

More recently, The Girfriend and I were accosted by one of Tuscaloosa's local flower ladies in the parking lot outside of Panera. She's well known around the area so were weren't as concerned, but she would not leave us alone until we bought one of her ridiculous paper angels from her. The Girlfriend gave her about seventeen cents for it so I didn't feel bad. I pretended like she wasn't there.

In a more horrifying incident, I was crossing under the train bridge on MacFarland only to see a hobo standing in the doorway of a freight car as I passed. I had my sunroof open. Things that ran through my mind:
1. Oh My God. He's going to jump into my car through the sunroof, kill me, take my money and my Volvo.
2. He's peeing off the sidecar and it's going to come in through my sunroof.
3. He, in an effort to achieve # 1, will miss and land in front of my car and I'm going to run over him and go to jail for killing a hobo. One count of Vehicular Manslaughter, check.

And then something happened today, and though it may seem mild to you, I literally almost went into cardiac arrest on the spot. The condominium complex I work for backs up to possibly the busiest train tracks in Tuscaloosa. It is not uncommon for trains to stop behind the complex and leave multiple cars on the tracks for another train to pick up later. Today was one such day where there were about three sidecars parked on the tracks behind the complex. I was in the back parking lot adjusting our new, magnetic high-tech lock/gate system for our pedestrian gate (and by adjusting I mean trying to figure out how the hell it worked).

I had been working on it for about five minutes when I finally got it to latch. I was pretty proud of myself, and also incredibly bored, so I was just standing in the yard enjoying the first sunny day in about two weeks. I was looking at the brand new rear fence (which is the chain-link kind and only about 5 feet tall) thinking to myself, "Dang, I hope this brush fills in quickly because this fence is really low and any hobo (seriously. I really do think like this) could climb this sucker."

And then it happened. I saw a man of about 45 with a scruffy beard and wild hair carrying a broken down suitcase walking down the railroad tracks. His eyes and cheeks were swollen from years of alcohol abuse. His skin was incredibly aged from overexposure to the sun. He made eye contact with me and I froze like a freakin' deer in headlights. He stopped walking and looked at me like he wanted to say something. I thought, "Oh my God. This is it. My worst fear realized. He's gunna pull out a bowie knife and come at me like Gary Busey on a coke bender." Before he could do, or say, anything I jumped in my golf cart and literally peeled out and off to the safety of my office at the front of the property.

Now, you may be thinking, "Good Lord, you're a terrible, terrible person." And yes, you would probably be correct, but that doesn't make me fear homeless people any less. I don't know what it is, but now I'll more than likely be even more scared in the future when I see a homeless person. I mean I'm already that guy that freaks out when the homeless people try to wash my windshield with newspaper and vinegar water (if you don't know what I'm talking about, drive around Atlanta for about 20 minutes and you'll figure it out).

Fitness Yoga

Wednesday, September 23, 2009
I know I have mentioned Fitness Yoga in a previous post. But I think there is definitely an explanation/story in order.

The whole thing started when The Girlfriend was looking at classes offered at the Rec Center here on campus. She was sitting on the couch when I walked in and asked what she was doing, she explained and we both sat down to see if there was anything we wanted to do together. There were Spin classes which I was told will "hurt your butt" and then classes like Hips, Butts, and Guts, and considering I'm a dude I was advised that class would not be one that I would be interested in.

Then we stumbled upon Fitness Yoga.

I know, I know, you're thinking, "What the Hell? How metro can you get?" I was thinking the same thing too, but let me tell you something - that class is a damn-fine workout. Our teacher, the lovely Miss Colleen tortured my abs, forearms, biceps, quads, and hamstrings for an hour two times a week and an hour-fifteen once a week.

The first day we went in we were early and totally walked in on the class before ours when they were right in the middle of their namaste, which, as it turns out, is incredibly inappropriate and embarrassing but whatever, it was a different teacher with a bunch of old people students so I really wasn't that upset.

The first thing she had us do was lie on our backs with our hands open to the sky and closed our eyes for what seemed like eternity while creepy Asian/Middle Eastern music played in the background (picture ohm-ing, sitars and crazy babbling). It was really bizarre... I just kept thinking, "Oh my God... The stereotypes were for real... These people or bat shit crazy."

And then Colleen kicked our asses.

Initially, once I rolled over from my zombie-like trance she had put us in with the laying on our back thing, it was just a bunch of funky stretches and stuff. I was physically adjusted into the correct position more than once, and looked like a total dumbass. Then the speed kicked in...

"Inhale up! Exhale into forward fold! Inhale left foot! Exhale right foot into downward dog! Inhale into plank! Exhale into crocodile! Inhale into full cobra! Inhale! Exhale! Inhale! Exhale!"

My brain: "Inhale, exhale, wait... what? whoa... I don't... wait... Plank? what is... Airplane?? What the hell is that? Oh shit. Now I'm off! When did I last breathe? Oh my God I'm gunna pass out, or my arms are going to give out. Or I'm going to pass out and have my arms give out... Good God they weren't kidding about this Fitness Yoga shit!"

After class I had sufficiently sweated through my shirt, looked like a freaking moron, stretched muscles I didn't know I had, busted my ass, and loved every minute of it.

Unfortunately, my schedule this semester doesn't allow me time to get to Fitness Yoga, but I might start trying for mat pilates. If that happens I will definitely be posting about it...

My apologies for being missing in action.

So I know I disappeared for most of the summer, and though I know it would sound nice if I were on vacay or something it totally wasn't true. I've been slam-crazy busy for the past whoever knows how long. But here's a summary of my summer up till now:

Promptly after my last article (the one about Animal Collective) I made a 42 on my MacroEcon midterm exam (Hooray me!). My teacher advised me, "If I were you, I'd just take the 'W' and write it off as a total loss." That was some time in the middle of June.

The rest of June led to most of my time being spent playing property manager at the condominium complex I work at (30-40 hours a week - and I'm "part-time").

July 4th was an amazingly relaxing 5 day vacation to the family lake house on Lake Martin with The Girlfriend, which was unbelievably needed. That place just centers my soul (more on this later).

July was also filled with twice weekly trips to the Rec with The Girlfriend for Fitness Yoga classes (more on this later as well). Also taking up much of my time in July was my second attempt at Intermediate Macroeconomics, this time your literary heroine was smart enough to take the class from a grad student who cared more about his workout routine than spending time grading our tests which resulted in me receiving an A- in the class!

Feeling triumphant as I rolled into August, I realized my senior year in school was catching up to me quickly. Work was hell for the first two weeks of August. Then school started, and I got a raise. I guess hard work actually does pay off?

September came and The Volvo died and spent the first half of September in the shop. The Girlfriend totaled her car, and so we were heavily relying on the use of Lawyerman's car to get us where we needed to go. The Volvo finally came out of the shop and The Girlfriend got a new car, and here we are today.

I finally have a minute to sit down and think about how in less than one week I will be 22. Officially too old to ever get excited about another birthday. On the bright-side, a bunch of the Birmingham kids are coming into town, we're playing Arkansas, I have the weekend off of work, and I have a couple of awesome presents I'm looking forward to.
