... On Being Sick...

Sunday, February 22, 2009
So, if you didn't already know, the current state of my immune system looks something like East LA in 1992. Luckily for me, today is an NCIS marathon, and despite weak plot lines and convenient excuses for plot resolution I love it. So here I am bundled up on my couch watching reruns, coughing up what's left of my lungs, and downloading music my brother suggested I should listen to if I wanted to know anything about music that normal people listen to (you know the crappy poppy/rap junk like Katy Perry and T.I. Apparently, !!! and The Whitest Boy Alive aren't cool yet).

But anyway, back to this weird head cold thing. It's definitely one of those ones where I am cognisant of when my Benedryl starts to wear off, not because that drowsiness goes away, but because I can actually feel my sinuses start to fill back up. Yum, right?

At least the pipe bomb that exploded in my head yesterday is gone. I mean I guess technically it was a headache, but after Saturday "ache" has become a very relative term. I had to work all day because I am an idiot and volunteered my extra time to sit in my office and stare at the wall. It was neat. The combo of hangover and head cold are about as much fun as being in a bus accident.

During my brief moments of lucidity I remember resting just my forehead on the slab of hard plastic I call my desk. Also, I have had no voice, so answering the phone was hilarious. I sounded like your 87 year old neighbor that's been smoking since she was 11 and speaking just above a whisper. I would answer the phone and people would just laugh. It was embarassing and I hate everyone. Especially those of you who were like, "Holy Hell! What is wrong with you?"

In summary, being sick sucks because you don't feel like yourself, and though the medicinal high of Nyquil is entertaining for a bit, when it starts to get old it gets old fast. I wish the cold medicine bender would hurry up and end already. Thank you Rhinovirus, you successfully destroyed what would have been an excellent weekend. Please don't visit me again for a while.

I had some issues embedding this, but it's worth clicking on. Just something hilarious I found on Youtube... It was a slow day at work...

Bowling... Night 1/4...

Monday, February 16, 2009
Okay, so... I totally forgot until yesterday that I had a CS exam on Tuesday so getting annihilated was kind of out of the question, but overall I feel bowling night was a success. I didn't make a complete jackass of myself and wipe out or throw the ball into the other lane.
Also, I broke 3 digits in my first game! Hooray Me!

The Red Head made our team "The Original Hibachi" t-shirts with iron-on letters and everything! She also attended our little fiesta and brought her's and McBDP's son, who shall henceforth be referred to as, "The Baby." Anyway, upon further discussion it was decided that The Red Head will be "team mom" - next week we get orange slices (soaked in vodka?) and juice boxes (maybe injected with grain alcohol?).

On a related note. I'm an idiot:
The letters on our team shirts are iron-ons and they were kind of already working their way off the shirts tonight at the alley, so naturally when I got home I was like "I'm going to iron these on better! I've got iron skills right?"

Wrong. See fig 1.2 for details.

Ummm... guess who isn't domestic.

You guessed correctly.

I totally forgot that you have to have a piece of fabric between the iron and the letters, so the letters immediately melted to my iron (which, thank God, is teflon.) and are pretty well stuck on there... Needless to say The Girlfriend made fun of me ruthlessly as she was on the phone at the time of the accident. Our conversation went as follows:

G: "Oh shit... Hmmm... Why did that happen?"
G/F: "What? What happened?"
G: "The letters melted to my iron? Did I do this wrong?"
G/F: "You're supposed to put a thin cloth between the iron and the shirt!"
G: "Now it just says Inal Chi... That doesn't even make sense."
G/F: "I was on the phone! Why didn't you just ask me? ugh..."
G: "Well... I thought I knew how to do it...?"
G/F: "The Red Head is going to make so much fun of you..."
G: "I think my iron is ruined..."
G/F: "Do like they do at those Japanesse places and dump vinegar on it while it's hot and scrape it off..."

So... Tomorrow's list of things to do:
Go to Wal-Mart
Buy the Iron On letters O, R, I, G, H, I, B, and A
Purchase new iron?
Iron the aforementioned letters on to t-shirt with undershirt in between...

So... I joined a intramural bowling team?

So my buddy McBDP texted me last week at about 1 A.M. asking if I would like to join an intramural bowling team with him, his brother, and his old roommate... Being deliriously tired and seeking anything remotely fun I jumped on the opportunity like Kirstie Alley on a Whataburger.

Tomorrow is our first bowling night, and aside from getting pants-shittingly drunk, I intend on at least pretending to know what I'm doing (I don't. I'm a terrible bowler). However, I began thinking about it, and God strike me down if I end up becoming this guy... see fig 1.1 --------------------------------------->

I think I'm a long way from deteriorating into this. But you know how quickly that snowball effect works. First it's the shoes...

Anyway, my plaid pants are spring colors, and I was thinking that maybe I should just wear my shirt from my other job at jiffy lube... It's 50% polyester and 50% rayon, and boy does that bad boy breathe! I had my bowling ball monogrammed with her name, "Big Betsy."

Well, like I said, maybe I'll get so drunk that I black out. I think that would be ideal.

The Weepies - You should try them on for size.

The Weepies:
Okay... Recently I've developed a keen liking of The Weepies... And it's not so much from one album as much as it is just all of their music in general. The folksy acoustic backdrop of their music is incredible passivizing, and Deb Talan's voice is incredibly unique and soothing.

The duo is a singing-songwriting couple from California whose careers took off when their song "The World Spins Madly On" and others from their first album "Say I Am You" gained some serious air-time on several television shows in 2006. They toured in Europe and America for most of 2006 and upon their return to California they decided to take a break for a while. During this time the couple married and had their first child.

Their newest album Hideaway was released in April of 2008, and a tour during the summer followed. But enough background:
Most of you probably have heard "The World Spins Madly On" and "Antarctica" but never had any idea who the band was or what they were about. Now you know. The acoustic folksy sounds of their music is refreshing and relaxing. Their music is the perfect backdrop to an evening out on your balcony or down by the lake. With just a quick enough pace not to bum anyone out, but not wild enough to make people wanna change the playlist so they can hear themselves think, I deem this band to be that band that you should listen to this spring while you're grilling out or just drinkin' on the porch.

Other songs to definitely download (From iTunes of course. These guys have paid their dues and are definitely worth paying for):

10 Things I'm Coveting Right Now...

Drum Roll Please...

The Top 10 Things I'm Coveting:

10. The Melina Club Chair:
An Urban Outfitters Masterpiece...
This bad boy is the perfect Mid-Century Modern Club Chair
* Please note the reflective steel leg
s and bracing...

9. The Lacoste Mainsail Watch...
Lacoste hates me right now and won't let me post the i
mage so here's the link: I'm cool
enough to click!

The simple face combined with the grosgrain band is
classically preppy, and totally worth the
$235...

8. M83: Saturdays=Youth
So many things are awesome about this record.
First: The title is pretty much the theme of my life.
Second: Anyone who listens to Sirius-XMU will be stoked to know that the song Kim & Jessie
lives on this album.
Third: Every time I listen to this album I picture myself cruising in the '69 SL280 with the top
down. Doesn't get much better than that.

7. The J-Crew Year-Round Solid Suit Vest:
I only own one vest... and though it's a classic pinstripe I think that a solid one is another
wardrobe necessity.

6. Hey Mambo White Wine...
I won this at a Wine Tasting I attended last fall, and have not been able to find it since.
If anyone knows where to find this in Alabama, Georgi
a, or Tennessee please GOD tell me...
This falls under the heading of crave/need. Not covet.
The only place I could find it is out in Cali. I do not li
ve there... Nor can I have it shipped to
this state... (Stupid Interstate Commerce Laws)

5. Vineyard Vines: Worth Gingham Oxford Tucker Shirt (in Garnish no less)
I have about 473819 blue dress shirts, but only 3 green ones, and none this color...
I love Vineyard Vines for their classic look, but more over for the construction of the shirt.
The fabric is lightweight and very breathable, and the build fits my wide shoulders/skinny frame well...

4. The Z-Gallerie Cara Bed:
Yes. I am aware that the bed has a girl name.
No. I don't give a shit.
The linen upholstery and the nickel nailheads, as well as the sharp corners give it a gender neutral feel. I'm was thinking about using dark brown sheets to cancel out the lighter color of the upholstery to give it a more masculine feel. We'll see if it actually works.

3. A subscription to Garden & Gun Magazine...
I know, I know... It sounds rediculous... It's not.
My dad sent me a link to it stating that it's what he wanted for his birthday, and I laughed out loud when I read the title, but it has some really awesome stuff in it. It's classically Southern (therefore I love it.) Right now they are featuring Frank Stitt - The head chef for Bottega, and Highlands in Birmingham. Having eaten there frequently when I still lived there - I think this guy is awesome. They are also featuring Bobby McAlpine - world renown architect. This guy is one of my idols. His homes are of a classic Southern Design, and second-to-none. Anyway, safe to say this is not just about Gardens or Guns...

2. The Pioneer PL 990 Turntable: Let's go old school... Although Turntables seem out of their prime, they're actually making a huge comeback among hipsters and weekend indie rockers alike. This ain't your momma's record player: the days of hissing and scratching are long gone replaced with crystal clear sound and the ability to once again enjoy the way music has been recorded for a little over a century.

1. A Pair of Frye Boots (Harness 12R):
Any of you who know me know that I have been bitching about how bad I need these for about 5 months. My girlfriend is going to punch me in the face if she hears me whine about how bad I want them again.
My cousin got them about a year ago, and I wanted to steal his.
They are classic boots that even a total Prepster like myself can get away with.
Their blunt toe and buckle on the side make them recognizable from under even the longest un-hemmed bootcut jeans.
The color makes them look like you've been at the farm with only those on for about 3 months, You could probably get away with wearing them at the office if you're place of business is business casual (like mine... which is WHY I NEED THEM...)

So there you have it. My list of things I'm really craving for February of 2009. I don't know how often I will be doing this because some of these probably won't change. But I'm gunna try to update it every now and then.

A More Mature Kind of Blog...

Who can forget the days of Xanga and LiveJournal, and all the crap we used to publish on there. We thought we were the coolest kids around because we had our own little block of webspace to babble about who we thought was a douche bag at school or who was the cutest girl. We stuck pictures of our friends and covered an inordinate amount of webspace with elaborate word art and really distracting backgrounds.
What a waste of time.
I really hope that in 7 more years I don't look back on this blog and think: "God. That was stupid. I really should have studied more for Marketing." Anyway, this a new kind of blog, where I reflect on the New Deep South - The people who are hanging around, the music they're listening to, the clothes they're wearing, and the drinks they're drinking. Join me won't you?
